Esophageal Disorders

Duke GI’s esophageal program provides state-of-the-art care for patients with esophageal disorders, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, esophageal dysphagia, achalasia, other esophageal motility disorders, Barrett’s esophagus, and eosinophilic esophagitis.  We offer the most advanced esophageal diagnostics and therapeutics available, including transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF), peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), endoFLIP, high-resolution esophageal manometry, pH-impedance testing and endoscopic therapy for Barrett’s esophagus.

Because care for patients with esophageal disorders often requires a multidisciplinary approach, Duke GI’s esophageal patients have access to our team of specialists through The Esophageal Center at Duke (the ECD) which operates in conjunction with Duke Thoracic Surgery.  The ECD centralizes and coordinates expert, comprehensive care for our patients in one convenient clinic location.

The ECD is involved in several ongoing and upcoming clinical trials in esophageal disorders, including studying novel therapeutics for patients with GERD, erosive esophagitis, and eosinophilic esophagitis. In addition, we are working on examining the interplay between lung transplantation, GERD, and esophageal motility in order to create an evidence-based esophageal testing protocol for lung transplant patients. Future work will also aim to collect clinical data and generate a comprehensive esophageal diseases registry to evaluate and improve patient outcomes.
