Research Interests:
Uptal Patel, MD, is an associate professor of medicine and pediatrics, an investigator in the Health Services Research and Development Unit at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and core faculty at the Duke Clinical Research Institute.

He is a clinical researcher who is primarily interested in how structural aspects of health care delivery impact outcomes among patients with kidney disease. In efforts to determine the optimal clinical strategies to manage patients with kidney disease and identify opportunities for improvement in their treatment, he has a broad research agenda (epidemiology and outcomes, health services and quality improvement, and health policy) across several clinical domains within nephrology (chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, cardiovascular medication use, hypertension, acute kidney injury) using a variety of study types and methodologies (surveys, qualitative analyses, simulation, secondary data analyses, systematic reviews, prospective cohort studies, and clinical trials).

Past and active projects address the following areas of interest: i) outcomes and quality of care in acute & chronic kidney disease; ii) barriers to optimal medication utilization in chronic conditions; and iii) organizational and systems approaches to improving care for chronic conditions, including the use of health information technology. These inter-disciplinary projects have been funded by a variety of public and private sources including the NIH, AHRQ, FDA, CMS, VA, ASN, and RPA.
