The Department of Medicine has a sincere and long-standing commitment to the recruitment, retention, and development of a diverse group of faculty and trainees, with particular attention to under-represented minorities and women. The Department’s interest is consistent with Duke University’s mission (www.diversity.duke.edu) , and is based on a commitment to excellence and leadership in all areas of medical care, medical education, and medical research, a mission that cannot be achieved without the participation of under-represented minorities and women.

The diversity mission of the Department of Medicine is supported by the Chairman and by three entities:

The Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Diversity, Laura P. Svetkey, MD, is responsible for enhancing the experience and advancement of every faculty and trainee in the Department of Medicine, with particular emphasis on under-represented minority populations (URM) and women. The Vice Chair facilitates and advocates for MRRC and for PWIM (see below). She works directly with the Department Chair in advancing and improving mentoring, faculty development, communications, and recognitions in order to recruit, retain and foster a diverse, productive and contented Department.

The Minority Recruitment and Retention Committee (MRRC)  in the Department of Medicine, chaired by Kimberley Evans, MD, is composed of faculty, fellows, house staff, and medical students. MRRC works closely with the Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Diversity and with the Department’s house staff selection committee. MRRC provides career mentoring, leadership development, and social networking for minority faculty and trainees.  In addition, MRRC sponsors outstanding minority visiting faculty for the George Phillips, Jr, MD and Martin Luther King, Jr. lectureships.

The Program for Women in Internal Medicine (PWIM) , chaired by Cathleen Colon-Emeric, MD, also works closely with the Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Diversity and with the Department’s house staff selection committee.  PWIM provides career mentoring, leadership development, and social networking for women faculty and trainees. PWIM sponsors faculty development seminars that are designed with women in mind, but are open to and valuable for all members of the Department. In addition, PWIM sponsors visiting faculty to address issues pertinent to women in medicine.
