Approximately one-third of the faculty focus primarily on the delivery of patient care; another third divide their time between patient care and either clinical or laboratory research; and the final third focus their endeavors in basic or clinical research. The entire faculty contribute significantly to the clinical and research training programs of the Department.

The Department of Medicine is a $250 million enterprise with national acclaimed research programs, superior education programs and diverse and innovative clinical programs. The strength of the department is embodied by its 430 faculty represented in 15 divisions:

The Department of Medicine clinical services occupy approximately 280 beds in Duke University Hospital, which has a consistent bed occupancy rate of 90%. Medicine beds are allocated to a general medicine unit and to the following subspecialties: cardiology, pulmonary, dermatology, gastroenterology, hematology, medical oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, and neurology. In addition, there are three critical care units: The Cardiac Care Unit, the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and the Medical Intensive Care Unit. All of the patients admitted to the medical service are assigned to one of the full-time faculty and are either self-referred, referred by their personal physician, or admitted through the Emergency Department. The Department of Medicine assumes a major role in the medical care of indigent patients for the Durham community.
