Where did you attend university/college?
Rhodes College

Where did you attend medical school?
University of Tennessee

What are your career goals?
I aim to care for adults with acute leukemia as a hematologist oncologist. Additionally, I hope to work in an academic medical center for the opportunity to mentor interested learners as well as to conduct clinical research. At this early point in my career, my emerging research interest is the association of baseline patient characteristics such as physical function, cognitive function, and body composition with clinical outcomes amongst patients with various types of hematologic malignancies."

"As Duke fellows, we learn from faculty members who are international experts in their respective fields, yet they do an amazing job of emphasizing the value of our contributions toward patient care."

Reflections on the Duke Program

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
The culture of support from upper level residents and fellows towards interns is really special.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
As Duke residents, we learn from faculty members who are international experts in their respective fields, yet they do an amazing job of emphasizing the value of our contributions toward patient care.

Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
They are amazing. Starting our careers as physicians during a pandemic has been challenging, but we have developed on the job camaraderie and resilience that I know will lead to life long friendships.

About Duke University and Durham

What has surprised you most about Duke?
I was genuinely surprised how quickly I was included into the familial feeling of the Duke Internal Medicine Residency. From day one, I was treated as a valuable member of the team, who had ideas and opinions that could contribute to taking care of our patients!

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
Durham has been, as advertised, an area for young families to thrive. My wife and I came to Durham with our two children and have been amazed by the variety of easily accessible activities to do together as a family, including attending sporting events, camping, hiking, and enjoying public play spaces.

How does the Triangle appeal to people of diverse backgrounds?
The triangle is amazingly diverse for its modest population size. It rivals major metropolitan regions with how it brings people from various backgrounds and origins to one area. There is clearly a communal commitment to social justice, diversity, and inclusion within Duke and the triangle as a whole.

Where did you choose to live and why?
We live in hope valley farms because we desired a single family home with a backyard. I can get to Duke in 13 minutes, and there is never any traffic!"

What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Durham?
Durham has many benefits of a large city while allowing you to work and leisure near your home!

What are your interests outside of medicine?
Watching/playing sports, hanging out with my kids, and exploring Durham with my wife!
