Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I wanted a residency program that encourages resident autonomy and emphasizes resident well-being in a positive and rigorous learning environment. It was also important for me to join a residency program with a strong Med-Peds presence.

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
I have been so impressed with the amount of autonomy Duke affords residents. As steep as the learning curve often feels, I have felt well-supported by our senior residents and multi-disciplinary teams who set remarkable standards for patient care.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
There is great deal of mutual respect between faculty and house staff that contributes to a collegial and encouraging work environment. Attendings have been quick to notice the investment that we make in our patients and provide practical patient-centered teaching that fosters our intellectual curiosity while bettering patient care.

Tell us about your co-residents. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
It is certainly easier to process the challenges and enjoy the successes when my co-residents also care so much about the patient. On top of that, my co-residents have wonderful personalities, and, importantly, great senses of humor!

What has surprised you most about Duke?
The amount of hands-on teaching and the degree of autonomy that residents have.

About Duke University and Durham

How does the Triangle appeal to people of diverse backgrounds? 
There's great cultural and intellectual diversity in the Triangle, which I think is due in part to the impact of the professional schools in the area.

Where did you choose to live and why?
I live in a managed building near downtown Durham, for the convenience of having a gym and other amenities.

What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Durham? 
It seems like a good market to buy a home in, but if you're not ready to commit, I would recommend renting in the interim.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I enjoy exercise, painting, comedy shows, music, board games, golf, and creative writing.
