Conferences and Educational Resources

Conferences

Weekly educational conferences form a core part of fellows’ education and come from throughout the Division of Cardiology and Heart Center. Topics include general cardiology as well as sub-specialties. For fellows, three required weekly conferences offer a core didactic curriculum: Cardiology Grand Rounds, Core Curriculum Conference and Clinical Case Conference.

The Cardiology Fellows Programs hosts a variety of focused conferences held each year, including:

  • Cardiology Fellows Clinical Case Conference. Clinical Cardiology Fellows are responsible for weekly fellow clinical conferences. These conferences consist of case-based presentations by the clinical fellows (usually of an unknown patient case), facilitated by faculty mentors. Each Friday, one fellow from various clinical rotations presents a case with an interesting diagnostic or therapeutic challenge as a springboard for reviewing pertinent medical literature and open discussion of the management of the condition.

    • Fridays, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. | Rm 1308, Duke North | lunch provided

  • Cardiology Grand Rounds. Cardiovascular Grand Rounds are a weekly divisional conference. Duke faculty and visiting professors present the latest clinical, translational and basic science research; these lectures supplement and update textbook and journal readings in all areas of cardiology. Cardiology Fellows are responsible for one yearly presentation to the entire Division as part of Cardiology Grand Rounds during their last year of fellowship.

    • Tuesdays, 7:15 - 8:15 a.m. | Room 2003, Duke North | light refreshments served

  • Duke faculty clinical, translational and basic science

  • Cardiology Core Curriculum Conference. This conferences builds medical knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and cognate (e.g. epidemiological and social-behavioral) sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care. Cardiology faculty present didactic instruction which covers the core/basic medical knowledge for fellowship training.

Additional Educational Resources

A Cardiology Learning Laboratory has been established on the 7th floor and is open to all Cardiology Fellows. Computers are available for slide making, and a variety of slide-making packages are available. A computer projection system allows for projection of both computer-generated slides and video. This projection system should be used for the noon conferences scheduled in rooms without fixed AV equipment. A laptop and projector are available in the Learning Lab for Fellows’ use.

Ask Dr. Chamis for any additional needs for the Learning Lab, as this area is designed specifically for Fellow usage and any items that would improve the facility will likely be made available.

In addition to these AV resources, other educational resources are available for all fellows including:

  • Access to Cardiosource Plus — Institutional license, with access to all SAP programs, guidelines, scientific statements, and journal articles
  • Mayo Clinic Board Review DVDs
  • Mayo Echo DVDs
  • Archive of conference presentations, board review notes, fellowship materials is stored on Fellows' Duke Box
