What are your career goals?
I am a prelim here and look forward to my future as a neurologist. I look forward to a career in academic medicine as teaching is an important aspect of my career goals.

What did you do the summer before internship?
I went backpacking through Thailand and Cambodia for a month with my girlfriend with whom I couples matched.

My co-interns are not just great people to spend time with outside the hospital, they are all incredibly interesting and teach me new things daily.

Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a place that would provide me with broad opportunities to explore as I sort through the process of starting my career. I am someone who likes to work in teams and flourish when hierarchy can be broken down. I wanted a program with true collegiality where I would feel comfortable putting myself outside of my comfort zone, where I learn best.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?
The faculty here are all unbelievable. They are incredibly well accomplished and brilliant, while being humble and down to earth. During my rotations I have always been treated as an equal, and the way patient care is approached it truly as a team, not a hierarchy. It is a fantastic place to work as all members of the clinical team, from case managers to pharmacists are looking to help and teach. While I haven't delved too deeply into the realm of research just yet, it is clear that there is something for everyone.

Tell us about your co-interns. How long did it take to connect?
We connected almost immediately. We had a huge group thread going long before residency started. They are not just great people to spend time with outside the hospital, they are all incredibly interesting and teach me new things daily.

About Duke University and Durham

Where did you choose to live, and why?
My girlfriend and I bought a house in North Durham. I love that I'm far enough away to feel disconnected, but close enough to the hospital to be there in 8 minutes.

What do you like to do outside of medicine?
I like to garden and try all the amazing food around Durham.
