Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a rigorous training program that gave residents autonomy, fostered a collegial work environment, and served a diverse patient population. I was also looking for a program with research opportunities and a strong sense of community.

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
The people! Such a supportive group of diverse residents and hospital staff working together to provide the best care to patients. Everyone I have met has been incredibly intelligent, yet humble. It makes learning and growing as a resident fun.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
The faculty are great teachers and mentors. They treat house staff as colleagues and encourage us to take ownership of our patients.

Tell us about your co-interns. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
I have really enjoyed getting to know my co-interns, both inside and outside the hospital. Everyone has been very friendly and supportive since the first day of orientation.

What has surprised you most about Duke?
I have been surprised by how warm and friendly everyone is- from program leadership to administration to hospital staff. It makes coming to work much more enjoyable.

About Duke University and Durham

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
The outdoors! So many gorgeous hiking and running trails in the area. You also can't beat the affordability and growing downtown area. I have an expanding list of restaurants to try.

Where did you choose to live and why?
I chose to live in an apartment complex in walking distance to the hospital, so I can get some fresh air on my commute and don't have to worry about traffic.

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I love to be outdoors- in the mountains, at the beach, or exploring trails around Durham. I also enjoy cooking, reading, doing yoga and listening to podcasts.
