Fellow Perspective

 

Tell us briefly about your background before embarking on your medical training:

I grew up in a small college town in Tennessee and headed up to the northeast for my undergraduate studies, majoring in chemistry. After college, I spent a year at NIH studying the effects of acute viral infections on immune cells within the central nervous system.

Please outline your career plans in gastroenterology (If you know it at this point in your training):

At this time I am interested in luminal gastroenterology.

What were you looking for in a fellowship program?

I wanted a fellowship that would give me a wide variety of exposure to different practice models and provide abundant opportunities in endoscopy, clinical work, and research. For instance, the Duke GI fellowship gives fellows the opportunity to work in multiple hospital environments including a large academic center (Duke University Hospital), a community-based hospital (Duke Raleigh), and a government run hospital (Durham VA). At each hospital there is a unique setup and different types of equipment available. This has allowed me to sample multiple future career options and learn different approaches to procedures in a variety of settings.

What advice might you offer residents looking at fellowship programs?

Enjoy the process and try to figure out where you see yourself fitting in the best. If you have a particular interest, find programs with solid mentors in that field. If you don’t have a particular interest yet, find a program that will be flexible in supporting your pursuits. 

From your experience in fellowship, what have you learned about training at Duke?

Overall Duke GI has far exceeded my expectations from a fellowship. The program provides excellent exposure to diverse areas within GI, and the fellowship program has been consistently responsive to feedback from fellows. The program leadership and faculty are extremely supportive. I feel that Duke is interested in helping me reach my career goals.

How is your life in the Triangle area outside of work?

My life in the Triangle outside of work includes hiking and hanging out with friends. Some of our favorite hiking spots are Eno River State Park, Umstead State Park, and Duke Forest. Before COVID-19, my husband and I enjoyed traveling (RDU is the best airport!) and were avid festival and concert attendees.

What is your favorite restaurant in Durham?

There are so many great restaurants in Durham! Some of my favorites are Pizzeria Toro, Grub, Alpaca, M Kokko, Q Shack, and Happy China.

Tell us about your interests and hobbies outside of work:

I enjoy playing tennis, trying new restaurants, and watching movies.
