Reflections on the Duke Program
What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a residency program that offered complex patient care and diverse research opportunities, in an environment that facilitated teamwork and camaraderie.
What are the strengths of the Duke Program?
The Duke Program does an incredible job of challenging you and encouraging your growth as a physician, while ensuring that you always feel supported by your fellow residents and attendings. The Program leadership cares about your well-being and progress as a trainee, and is always open to hearing feedback about how to make the program better.
What are your observations about the relationship between faculty and house staff?
I was impressed from the start by how approachable the faculty at Duke were. They have been universally transparent with their expectations, incredibly supportive, and have a true passion for teaching residents.
Tell us about your co-interns. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
I'm consistently impressed with the the accomplishments of my co-interns, they are truly inspiring people. This program is filled with especially kind and friendly residents that makes the transition to a new institution as seamless and stress-free as it can be. While COVID has made it more difficult this year than in prior years to see each other outside of the hospital, I feel as though our shared experiences on the floors have facilitated lasting friendships, and proven that they are a group that is easy to rely on.
What has surprised you most about Duke?
I think I've been most impressed with the friendliness of the people here, from faculty to fellow interns and residents, to all the staff that I work with in the hospital. It is an incredibly welcoming place, and that goes a long way in making the work here enjoyable!
