"The faculty do an excellent job with promoting the autonomy of the residents without being completely hands off, which is refreshing and helps aid in our learning. I also think the faculty at Duke are very effective at promoting comradery within teams.

Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a rigorous program, but also one where the house staff was not afraid to joke around and have fun. I think being able to strike the balance between residents taking their work seriously but not themselves overly seriously was important to me.

What are your observations about the relationship between faculty and house staff?
The faculty do an excellent job with promoting the autonomy of the residents without being completely hands off, which is refreshing and helps aid in our learning. I also think the faculty at Duke are very effective at promoting comradery within teams. Whether it's being available in the work room as opposed to their offices during the afternoons or taking the team out for meals or coffee, the attendings make a conscious effort to promote a healthy learning and professional environment.

Tell us about your co-interns. What has helped you connect, support each other, and form friendships?
Our group chat keeps everyone up to date on fun events or get togethers people are having or going to. Our class in particular has a lot of people with very diverse interests and who are willing to try new things which makes for fun outings and events!

About Duke University and Durham

What is the best thing about living in Durham and the Triangle?
The food and beer scene in Durham is pretty outstanding. All the breweries I've been to so far are awesome places to hang out, brew great beer, and play trivia.

Where did you choose to live and why?
I'm renting a two-bedroom house in Walltown. I've always wanted to have a house to myself and the houses in that neighborhood were affordable and have character as opposed to some of the complexes I looked at when I came to visit. And it has a doggie door in the back so if I ever find time to have a dog it'll come in handy.

What advice would you give to someone looking to move to Durham?
Definitely look to see what houses or split houses are renting in the Walltown/Trinity area, they tend to be just as if not more affordable than one of the complexes downtown and not too much farther away from all the fun spots in Durham!

What are your interests outside of medicine?
I love checking out breweries. I used to play lacrosse in college and like to play pick up sports like basketball or soccer. I love playing fantasy football, I'm in a bunch of leagues with my college buddies. When time allows it, I like playing strategy based computer games.
