Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I wanted a program with strong clinical exposure on both sides (Medicine and Pediatrics) that would prepare me to care for bread-and-butter and allow me to recognize and manage complex cases and zebras. I wanted a program that would expose me to clinical research not because I have an interest in research as a career, but because I it is important to learn from providers who approach their field critically and because of the need to be facile with academic literature in our evidence-based world. Finally, I knew that I would only thrive in a collegial environment where I could work as a member of a team with other residents and with the entire spectrum of clinical staff.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?
True clinical excellence in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine with a wide catchment (especially important on pediatrics). MedPeds has a strong established (and respected) presence in the entire system. Finally, the most impressive clinic experience that I saw on my interview trail, which has been as wonderful as I hoped in practice.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
Wonderfully collegial with a strong camaraderie shared by the faculty and residents. On both Medicine and Pediatrics I have had impromptu one-on-one teaching from attendings, only to find out later that they are a world expert on the subject!

What opportunities have become available to you during your time at Duke?
You name it, it is available! I have an interest in QI and systems management and have been able to be involved in a program-wide project on Medicine, a Med-Peds clinic project, as well as opportunities to be involved in pediatrics as well.

About Duke University and Durham

What's best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
I have a young family, so Durham was a natural fit for us. Great opportunities for children, lots of resources, and a great cost-of-living. We've spent time on the beach and camping, hiking, and biking in the mountains. And any day off you can find me in the beautiful rural area surrounding Durham on my bike!
