What are your career goals?
I plan to work in academic medicine. I enjoy teaching, research, and global health.

What did you do the summer before internship?
I spent a lot of time at the beach, surfing, and visiting family and friends!

Duke has everything I could've hoped for in a residency program. I'm learning a lot and having a lot of fun doing it. I hope you consider becoming part of our #Dukefamily!

Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I ultimately looked for a program that had happy, tight-knit residents, enthusiastic faculty, diverse clinical experiences, and abundant opportunities for research, teaching, and global health. I also wanted to live in an area that was laid-back, affordable, and amenable to pursuing outdoor activities such as exploring the nearby rivers, mountains, and beaches!

What are the strengths of the Duke program?
Duke’s program provides exceptional clinical training with robust inpatient, outpatient, and subspecialty exposure. The block scheduling structure allows for regular and immersive outpatient experience with predictable weekends off to pursue outside hobbies. There is a lot of dedicated time for teaching, from daily ambulatory morning reports and noon conferences to weekly grand rounds and intern/resident reports. The opportunities here for research, underserved outreach, teaching, and global health are also immense. However, the program's greatest strengths, in my opinion, lie in the wonderfully fun-loving and supportive colleagues that we get to work with on a daily basis!

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
The relationships between the faculty and house staff are fantastic. Everyone at Duke is incredibly friendly and approachable, and the faculty are genuinely invested in resident wellness and helping us succeed both personally and professionally. There is also a strong advising/mentorship infrastructure in place, and many of my colleagues and I have already connected with great mentors!

Tell us about your co-interns. How long did it take to connect?
It took no time at all! My co-interns are some of the most brilliant, well-rounded, and kindhearted people I've met. We have a lot of fun together both inside and outside of the hospital and have done everything from swimming at the Eno Quarry and grilling out at Falls Lake to seeing concerts in Raleigh and touring some of the Triangle's great restaurants and breweries. We're even planning trips to Asheville and the beaches!

What has surprised you most about Duke?
I was surprised by just how collegial the atmosphere here is. From the nursing staff to the consultants and faculty, everyone has been very welcoming and eager to teach. It feels great to be a part of this kind of team!

About Duke University and Durham

What's best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
There is so much going on in Durham and the Triangle that it would take years to experience it all! Some of my favorite things to do in the area include relaxing in a hammock at the Eno Quarry, swimming at the many beaches of Jordan or Falls Lake, strolling though Duke Gardens, visiting the lemurs at the Duke Lemur Center, playing trivia at Bull McCabes, eating at Fosters, Guglhupf, Elmos, Alpaca, Local 22, Burger Bach, and Guasaca, getting homemade ice cream at Maple View Farm, or grabbing a beer with friends at Ponysaurus, Tyler's, Bull City Cider Works, or Fullsteam.

Where did you choose to live, and why?
I live in an apartment complex between 9th Street and the hospital. It's a great location because I'm able to walk to work everyday as well as walk to all of the shops, grocery stores, and restaurants on 9th!

What do you like to do outside of medicine?
I love anything outdoors - hiking, camping, surfing, swimming at the beach or lake. I also really enjoy live music, traveling, cooking, trying out new restaurants and breweries, and spending time with family and friends!

Parting thoughts?
