Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a large academic training center, filled with a people who are great to work with and love what they do, and in a city that is easy and fun to live in! Duke is the perfect fit!

What are the strengths of the Duke program?
Training at Duke allows you to learn by caring for a large volume of diverse patients with broad range of diseases. At Duke you have the opportunity to see all sub-specialties of medicine and see new and exciting advances firsthand. You have access to experts who are more than willing to mentor and guide you to reach your career goals.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
The faculty are extremely supportive and genuinely interested in the well-being of the house staff. They host social events at their own homes, join residents for a drink in downtown Durham, or come out to participate in a pick-up basketball or football game.

Tell us about your co-interns. How long did it take to connect?
Everyone is brilliant! It is exciting to be around so many bright people who are still very humble, helpful, and fun to be around. A group gets together at least once per week for either drinks, dinner, or a basketball game.

About Duke University and Durham

What's best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
Durham is the perfect sized city and there is something for everyone. Downtown you can enjoy drinks, live music, and excellent food! Sports fans will be entertained all year long by being able to watch the Durham Bulls, Blue Devils, Tar Heels, Hurricanes, and Panthers! The DPAC brings world-class music and shows to Durham every weekend. You can even enjoy a day at the Jordan Lake beach without leaving town!

Where did you choose to live, and why?
My wife and I chose to buy a townhouse in South Durham. My wife works in Chapel Hill and it is a central location between Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill - which makes it very easy to explore the Triangle. Southpoint Mall is very close, which makes my wife very happy.
