Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I wanted a program that would provide rigorous clinical training and challenge me to be the best physician I can be in a positive, supportive environment.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?
The Duke IM program's sense of family is unrivaled, passion for medicine is contagious and the residents and faculty alike are all incredibly inspiring, yet humble individuals. I feel extremely fortunate to be working amongst such accomplished and genuinely nice individuals every day.

What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
There is an excellent balance of autonomy and support from the faculty. For the most part, attendings and fellows alike are super approachable and eager to teach, even when they are very busy.

Tell us about your co-interns. How long did it take to connect?
My co-interns are great! I would say it took a few weeks to really connect.

About Duke University and Durham

What's best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
I think the best part about Durham is definitely the Duke community. Also, the cost of living is great, people are very friendly and it's very easy to get around.

Where did you choose to live, and why?
We chose to live in one of the apartment complexes right by the hospital because we like being able to walk to work and don't have to worry about driving home in bad weather or after a long day.

What do you like to do outside of medicine?
Spending time with friends, going on food adventures, being outdoors, figure skating, going to shows

Parting thoughts?
Duke IM is very couples-friendly! There are several couples within our class and we all have our vacations and even a good portion of our schedules synced up with our significant others, which was very thoughtful and generous of the program leadership.
