What did you do the summer before internship?
I spent much of my last year in Tugela Ferry, South Africa on a research fellowship. As internship approached, I spent time hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains and exploring Cape Town/Durban.
I have been blown away by the optimism, passion and compassion of my colleagues as well as the teamwork that I have encountered in just one month on the wards.
Reflections on the Duke Program
What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a program that would provide me with both solid training in Clinical Medicine and the opportunity to pursue my passion in global health and research.
What are the strengths of the Duke program?
The people, the resources and the connections. I have been blown away by the optimism, passion and compassion of my colleagues as well as the teamwork that I have encountered in just one month on the wards.
What are your observations about the relationships between faculty and house staff?
Faculty are supportive and, while they do not shy away from pushing you to step out of your comfort zone, they will provide the necessary guidance to achieve and to provide patient-centered care.
Tell us about your co-interns. How long did it take to connect?
An eclectic, welcoming and interesting group of people.
What has surprised you most about Duke?
Despite how hard we are working on a daily/weekly/monthly basis to care for our patients and the community, the joy that comes from working with this team of peers, mentors and Attendings is tangible.
About Duke University and Durham
What's best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
Eno River State Park and the Al Buehler trail. The city is very manageable and there is always something going on.
Where did you choose to live, and why?
I live over by Duke Forrest. I chose this for the proximity to trails and the nice community.

Run, Bike, Hike, Ski, Travel, Read
