What are your career goals?
I want to work in academic medicine in a position where I work closely with students/residents in a clinical setting, but with a strong focus in research.

Program leadership, under the direction of Dr. Zaas, has really excelled in cultivating an environment where you feel both supported and motivated by your peers and the faculty at Duke.

Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a residency program with a strong career development component. I wanted a place that would train me be a great clinician, but also provide mentorship, leadership, and research opportunities.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?
I have been most impressed by my co-residents. While warm and friendly, they are also some of the most talented and driven people I have ever met. Program leadership, under the direction of Dr. Zaas, has really excelled in cultivating an environment where you feel both supported and motivated by your peers and the faculty at Duke.

About Duke University and Durham

Where did you choose to live, and why?
I live in the 300 Swift apartments, right off the Durham Fwy, near the 9th street area. I love it here! I love that I'm close to the restaurants/shopping on 9th, but can also get downtown in 5 minutes. Most importantly, I'm close enough to run home if I forget my pager, but I'm far enough away that I can't see the hospital out of my bedroom window.

Based on your life, what advice would you give about moving to Durham?
Live in Durham. I understand the draw to live outside of the city because its definitely cheaper, but the convenience of living close can't be beat. You only have so much time off from work, and being able to meet friends for dinner or drinks without having to plan in advance is worth it to me.

What do you like to do outside of medicine?
I just discovered the Eno state park and I have loved going up there to hike! I just do 3-5 mile hikes to get out into the sunshine and experience some nature on my days off. I also love to eat! And trying new restaurants around Durham has become my new hobby.
