The Duke Center for Research to Advance Healthcare Equity (REACH Equity) is seeking applications for an internal mentored research career development award (CDA) for junior investigators proposing research related to the Center’s theme of addressing racial and ethnic disparities in health by developing and testing interventions that improve the quality of patient-centered care in the clinical encounter.
Applicants for the REACH Equity CDA must propose research broadly related to this theme. We recognize that the development and testing of an intervention may be beyond the readiness of the science or applicant and/or beyond the scope of this award mechanism. Therefore, proposals may employ any research method to address a question relevant to enhancing minority health or reducing racial/ethnic disparities by improving the quality of care in the clinical setting. The research must clearly lead to the opportunity to develop and test an intervention.
Consistent with our Center’s goal of increasing diversity in the research workforce, we have set as a programmatic priority the selection of at least 50% of awardees from under-represented racial and ethnic groups. The REACH Equity CDA provides up to $75,000 direct costs per year for two years. Applicants are expected to use the award to protect at least 50% of Total Professional Effort (TPE).
Application deadline is 5 p.m., Dec. 16, 2019. Funding begins July 2020.
REACH Equity CDA Info Session
Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to meet with REACH Equity Investigator Development Core Director Laura Svetkey and Center Director Kimberly Johnson to receive input on aligning their proposal with the REACH Equity theme.
There will be an information session from 10-11:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 5, Duke Medicine Pavilion room DMP2W96. We strongly encourage potential applicants to stop by this “Open House” session. However, if you are unable to attend during this time, please contact email@example.com.
Individuals considering applying for a REACH Equity CDA are strongly encouraged to submit a Letter of Intent, due on Sept. 30. The form is available on the CDA website here.
REACH Equity and KL2 Program Application Preparation Program
Potential applicants are also strongly encouraged to participate in the joint Reach Equity and KL2 Program Application Preparation Program (REKAPP). This program will assist investigators with preparing their applications. Starting in September, REKAPP participants meet as small groups for targeted discussions focusing on specific sections of the grant application (similar to the School of Medicine K-club). These meetings will be facilitated by a senior faculty member and K program alumni. Space in this program is limited, and those accepted are expected to commit to completing all program requirements. Information about the REKAPP program is available here. Note: the REKAPP application deadline is August 26.
