Dr. Bedlack's advocacy work is directed at optimizing ALS care and improving enrollment in ALS research studies. It includes fundraising, lobbying to Congress, writing in patient-centric literature and websites, helping to build new multi-disciplinary ALS Clinics and a VAMC Tele-ALS Clinic, and a novel program called ALSUntangled that utilizes social networking to review alternative and off-label therapies.
This is his second national patient advocacy award. In 2009 he won the American Academy of Neurology's Viste Award.
Bedlack shared a story about one of his patients at the Talk Story: Voices of Medicine show in March 2013
