By etm18@dhe.duke.edu
The Duke Translational Research Institute (DTRI), a component of the Duke Translational Medicine Institute (DTMI), supports development and proof-of-concept evaluation of therapeutic agents, biomedical devices, and diagnostic tests. The DTRI Supplemental Award for NIH Projects provides funding up to $25,000 to support use of an unanticipated technology, collaboration, or resource discovered to be needed during innovative, NIH funded, translational research. Each award will consist of up to $25,000 (direct costs) with an expected start date of Feb. 1, 2014 and ending on Jan. 31, 2015; no indirect or overhead costs are awarded. Up to 14 proposals may be funded during this award cycle. Requests for no-cost extensions (carryovers) will not be approved. Duke Principal Investigators of active NIH U-, P-, or R-funding mechanism research projects funded at least through Jan. 31, 2015 are eligible to apply. Applicants will be asked to attach (1) a copy of the Notice of Grant award and (2) a copy of the specific aims page from the NIH-funded project for which supplemental funding is being requested. Applicants must prepare a proposal that briefly describes the aims of their currently funded project, a description of the new work proposed, how the work will accelerate the existing research project, and the deliverables that will result from the funding; the proposal must be 3000 characters or less, including spaces. Applicants must attach a proposed budget of up to $25,000 in direct costs using PHS 398 page 4. The DTRI Project Office staff members will triage proposals to reviewers. The review committee will be comprised of DTRI Pilot Program Leadership and the Duke CTSA Co-Principal Investigators. Reviewers will score the proposals based on the following criteria:
  • Assessment of probability the work will enhance an existing NIH-funded translational research project.
  • Clear delineation between current NIH award and funding for supplemental pilot award.
Applications from Duke faculty must be submitted to the Office of Research Administration seven business days ahead of the external Dec. 12, 2013 deadline. Click here for more details about this opportunity.
