What are your career goals?

My goal is to build a career as a clinician educator and academic nephrologist. My current interests include preventative nephrology, critical care nephrology and clinical reasoning.

What were you looking for in a fellowship program?

I wanted to train in environment that was both rigorous and nurturing. After training at Duke for residency and rotating in nephrology, I knew the nephrology division would provide both of those things. I also wanted a program that fostered different career paths that catered towards each fellows needs. Lastly, I wanted dedicated mentors. There was no shortage of nephrologists willing to enthusiastically mentor me during my residency and now fellowship (including program leadership) and continuing to work with them is real privilege!

What are the strengths of the Duke program?

The people! World class researchers, clinicians and educators are intensely invested in the growth of trainees. Fellows are front and center in the program with lots of responsibility from day 1 but all the necessary support in place. The VA is a huge benefit, it's a privilege to take care of the North Carolina veterans.

What has surprised you most about Duke?

I knew there would be excellent clinicians and investigators but to this day I am still surprised and inspired the kindness and collegiality across specialties and departments.

What have you liked about living in Durham/RTP?

I love living in Durham! The proximity to nature is hard to beat with lakes and state parks only minutes away. Also beaches and national park only a few hours. The food and breweries are great. Life is also pretty easy with reasonable prices, traffic, and parking. Even though I lived in LA and NY for most of my life, the opportunities and activities compared to the cost and ease of living make Durham hard to top.

What advice would you give about moving to Durham?

Do it!
