Megan Clowse, MD, MPH, is excited about a new development in the Duke Lupus Clinic that has opened up new ways of understanding, treating, and talking about lupus.

Kathleen Cooney, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine, announced that Andrew Alspaugh, MD, will serve as Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Medicine, and David Pisetsky, MD, PhD, has agreed to serve as Associate Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, effective April 1.

It was the chance to try to help people, even at their sickest, that drew Dr. Steven Crowley to medicine 25 years ago.

Today the nephrologist still sees patients at the Durham VA Medical Center, but he spends much more time decoding how immune system cells contribute to hypertension and organ damage in his laboratory.

Still, the mission endures.

“The most important aspect of our work is to show solidarity with our patients. That is something we can always do, regardless of the stage of their illness,” says Crowley, whose research may lay groundwork for needed improved treatments.

David Pisetsky, MD, PhD, professor of medicine (Rheumatology and Immunology), was awarded the Presidential Gold Medal by the American College of Rheumatology.

Duke medical student Godefroy Chery, MHS, was ready for his moment in the spotlight, thanks in large part to the mentorship he’s received from Medicine faculty members Scott Palmer, Laurie Snyder, and others in Palmer’s lab.
