GIM Staff Spotlight: Avi Alkon

Share

Avi Alkon has been at Duke for over 15 years and is a Database Analyst in our division. Learn more about him in the interview below.

What does your work as a Database Analyst involve?

From the research side, I have worked on over 100 different studies helping set up data collection methods.  Studies range from simple pilot projects to multi-site studies.  About twelve years ago I developed a custom study tracking application.  In that time dozens of studies have used it to manage their study flow.  But these days I have shifted my skillset to use REDCap since it has many more features for study management than a few years ago.  I also help studies build recruitment cohorts using DEDUCE, Caboodle, manage project space and access within PACE, reporting, helping with data queries when preparing for grant submission.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I have been very lucky and enjoyed working with many wonderful people across Duke and the VA.  As far as my actual job, I enjoy finding new creative ways to solve technical or data-related problems.  Data can be boring, but surprisingly finding new ways to access and manage data or finding technical solutions for a study or a problem can be fun and rewarding.

What passions or hobbies do you have outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with my wife and pets.  I guess in terms of hobbies, I like to tinker and build things.  I also enjoy playing the guitar.  Although I often joke that I have more guitars than my musical talent warrants.

What is your favorite food?

Middle eastern food for sure. Second would be Indian.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Just one?  Any middle eastern restaurant will do the trick.  Neomonde, Mediterra Grill, Al-Taiba Halal Market, Sita, Indian Monsoon, Lime & Lemon, Chimney Indian Kitchen in Chapel Hill.
