I am honored to serve as the Chair of this esteemed department, the largest of the 23 departments within the Duke University School of Medicine. With a history of excellence in patient care, research, and education, our department is a driving force behind world-class clinical and academic research at Duke and beyond.
Our faculty are at the forefront of groundbreaking discoveries and innovative patient care, whether they are advancing our understanding of G protein-coupled receptors, pioneering cancer treatments, or leading research in organ transplants and aging. These achievements are not the work of isolated individuals; instead, they result from a culture of collaboration that transcends traditional boundaries and fosters partnerships both within Duke Health and worldwide.
What sets the DOM apart from others is our unwavering commitment to the three-part mission of academic medicine: excellence in patient care, education, and research.
Our mission is clear: to provide compassionate health care for all individuals, create an inclusive environment to train the next generation of physician leaders, and drive new scientific knowledge that translates into better health for people in our community and beyond.
As a department, we commit to being value-driven and data-informed. We also look at all problems and challenges through the lens of equity.
Our faculty, more than 800 strong, are leaders of national societies, principal investigators in major research networks, and leaders of Duke centers and institutes, including the Duke Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development, Duke Clinical Research Institute, Duke Global Health Institute, Duke Human Vaccine Institute, and the Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
We are committed to training the future leaders in health care and research. Our internal medicine residency program is consistently ranked as one of the best in the nation, and our outstanding fellowships and advanced training programs provide specialized training for physicians, focusing their skills on cardiovascular disease, cancer, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, and other subspecialties. Our outstanding medical training prepares individuals for exceptional careers in clinical care and inspires hope for the future of health care.
I invite you to explore our website and learn more about our department’s work. We continue our long-standing history of moving medicine forward, and we are excited to share our achievements with you.
Sincerely,
