Dr. Christopher Jones, associate professor in the division of General Internal Medicine and the director of Outpatient Palliative Care at Duke University School of Medicine, was named the new editor-in-chief of the Journal of Palliative Medicine (JPM). He assumed this position on August 1, 2023.
A nationally recognized leader and speaker on the business of palliative care with a specialty in billing and coding, Dr. Jones has been the editor-in-chief for the journal Palliative Medicine Reports since 2020 and Series Editor for the Specialists Series in JPM since 2018. Dr. Jones will succeed Charles von Gunten, MD, PhD, who has served as JPM’s editor-in-chief for 20 years.
“I am so excited to serve the field as the next editor-in-chief of JPM. I look forward to building on the incredible reputation Dr. von Gunten and Managing Editor Lisa Pelzek-Braun have created for JPM,” said Dr. Jones. “I hope to continue JPM’s role as the practicing clinicians’ journal and look forward to expanding the reach of JPM throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America to serve as the leader in actionable research and education to further the practice of palliative care and hospice.”
Journal of Palliative Medicine is a leading, international peer-reviewed journal providing clinically useful and field-changing research and practice for clinicians in hospice and palliative care. JPM receives over 800 submissions annually and, along with its open-access sister journal Palliative Medicine Reports, publishes original research articles, reviews, brief reports, editorials, case series, special reports, book and media reviews, and the specialists series submitted by authors from across the globe.
Outside of his palliative care work, Dr. Jones enjoys spending time with his wife, Jenn, a Duke Cancer Center Triage Nurse, and two children, Will (10) and Cameron (4). On his days off you may find him watching his son's soccer games or spending time with his family in Oak Island, NC.
