2021 GIM Year in Review

One of our favorite things every year is to look back and re-read some of our favorite news stories from the past year; those stories, pictures, and videos never disappoint.

Our faculty and staff spotlights, as well as our announcements of new faculty and staff members, are without a doubt some of our most-viewed stories. But 2021 was an exciting year for other Duke GIM news as well! Here are the top 10 news stories — those most clicked this year by our GIM eNews readers:

10. DePasquale receives Early Career Achievement Award (August 2021)

Depasquale honored with award at Adult Development and Aging conference


9. 3 GIMers featured in 45 portrait painting (March 2021)

Local artist, Maria Bennett Hock, collaborated with Duke University Hospital to paint 45 portraits in 45 days in honor of "the brave women and men who put their safety aside to see to the needs of others." The exhibit was on display in early 2021 and featured 3 GIMers.


8. Funding Awards (August 2021)

Drs. Boulware and Dolor received funding awards totaling over $6 million


7. Center’s new name reflects goal of lifelong change (January 2021)

Duke Lifestyle and Weight Management Center, formerly known as the Duke Diet and Fitness Center, marked its 50th anniversary in 2020. The new name better represents the center's philosophy and services.

6. MGR honors Dr. Oddone (August 2021)

The August 27th session of Medicine Grand Rounds honored Dr. Gene Oddone, who recently retired after 35 years at Duke


5. Faculty Development Academy (October 2021)

15 GIM faculty joined the academy; 6 faculty as chairs and coaches


4. Duke Clinical Leadership Program (January 2021)

Drs. Halpern, Spector, and Wachter selected for 2021 Duke Clinical Leadership Program


3. DIHI Awards (March 2021)

Of 7 awardees from DOM, 3 from GIM: Ming, Yeatts, and Chatterjee


2. Women in Medicine (September 2021)

Dr. Zipkin on WIM month: Stepping up to understand and improve the state of women in medicine throughout the year and the decades ahead


1. Excellence Awards (December 2021)

We announced the recipients of our sixth annual GIM excellence awards, which included 7 individual awards and one team award.
