Stefania Alexopoulos, MBBS

Stefania Alexopoulos, MBBS, fellow in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, has received a 2019 Endocrine Fellows Foundation grant.

Dr. Alexopoulos's project is "Impact of glycemic control on histologic severity and progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)."

"We will be using the Duke NAFLD Clinical Database and Biorepository to examine the association of hemoglobin A1c with histologic severity of NAFLD, and we also hope to analyze a population of patients with paired liver biopsies to examine the hemoglobin A1c trajectories and their association with progression/regression of NAFLD severity," Dr. Alexopoulos said. "Not much is understood about how changes in glycemic control influences severity of NAFLD - particularly using gold standard methods, such as biopsy."

Alexopoulos is one of eight recipients of the national award.
