
The Education Achievement Award recognizes faculty who have shown exceptional dedication to the art and practice of teaching, are beloved by former students, trainees, and faculty members, and who have made a positive impact on individuals' learning and careers.
Awardees of the award have impacted the career development of learners throughout the Duke Department of Medicine. They have demonstrated a commitment to educating the next generation of medicine physicians, outstanding quality of teaching provided, including ability to convey topic-based teaching along with consistent creation of an environment that encourages all learners. Additionally, awardees have an evidence of longitudinal and impactful local, regional, or national leadership as an educator, and they are recognized as a thought leader in Medicine education.
John Roberts, MD, MEd , associate professor, Nephrology, is known for tirelessly working to improve undergraduate and graduate medical education at Duke and nationally. Serving as the director for Undergraduate Medical Education, and the director for Clerkship, his ongoing commitment to career development has allowed him to adapt to evolving needs and opportunities in medical education, including the integration of digital platforms, simulations, and interactive patient videos. These innovations helped to support the seamless transition to digital learning for Duke’s pre-clinical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Roberts is an enthusiastic, clear, thoughtful teacher, a dedicated mentor, a most creative educator and curriculum developer, and a scholar, his nominators said.
