Dr. Nia Mitchell is no stranger to speaking at events, especially when the subject is about obesity, her primary research focus. She has been on the road lately presenting for two events in Richmond, Virginia.

In honor of childhood obesity awareness month, which is during the month of September, Mitchell spoke at a breakfast event at Faces of HOPE, a community organization with the goal of preventing and treating childhood obesity. She discussed how society projects unrealistic expectations about body image and how internalizing these expectations can have long-term damage. She also provided information about how to encourage everyone to have a positive body image.

Mitchell was invited to give the Dr. J. David Markham Award Lecture at the Virginia Commonwealth University Division of General Internal Medicine Grand Rounds. Her presentation explained her research with Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) program.

Dr. Mitchell also had the opportunity to speak to VCU residents and chief residents at their morning report about the “The art of self-promotion: successfully marketing your research.”
