We are proud to announce a new promotion in DGIM! Bruce Peyser, MD, has been promoted to Full Professor.
Dr. Peyser is a distinguished Clinician Educator who is a national and international leader in medical education and clinical care. Dr. Peyser received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his medical degree from Cornell University. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., and then transferred to the University of Rochester to complete his internal medicine residency. He also served as chief medical resident there in 1986-87. He joined the faculty there in 1987 filling both a clinical and educational role. In 2005, Dr. Peyser moved to Duke where he continued his clinical and educational roles in the Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) at the Pickett Road practice.
Since joining the Department of Medicine at Duke in 2005, Dr. Peyser has served as a leader within a number of important medical education initiatives for medical students and residents which are well-aligned with his clinical and academic interests. He has been a teacher in the Practice Course for the last 9 years. He has served as both a small group leader in addition to leading several large group lectures. He was recognized by this group with a professionalism award in 2013. He also has been a teacher for second year medical students in the Clinical Skills Course since it started in 2011. Additionally, he has served as a founding faculty member and mentor in the Primary Care Leadership Track where he leads a weekly seminar series.
Dr. Peyser has served as Practice Medicine Director for the very successful Pickett Road Internal Medicine Clinic for several years. This is one of only three sites where Duke internal medicine residents receive their general medicine ambulatory education. In his role as Medical Director, Dr. Peyser oversees the operations and supervises 7 internists, one physician assistant and 20 house staff. This practice also serves as one of the main sites for teaching Duke medical students outpatient care with about 15 students per year rotating through the practice. Dr. Peyser has had active leadership in the International Consortium of Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships. He has presented his findings at the last 5 annual meetings and served as host of the 2015 conference.
