This appointment represents a major step forward in fully integrating the goals and operations of our ambulatory services within Duke Medicine. In this role, Mike will be responsible for the growth and performance of Duke Medicine ambulatory programs, advancement of Duke's differentiating and distinctive ambulatory services, and providing leadership across Duke Medicine on patient safety and quality initiatives as the Chief Medical Officer. Mike's appointment followed an extensive national search and he will assume his new responsibilities on Tuesday, July 5. Most immediately, Mike will have the important task of leading the creation of an ambulatory service strategy that aligns with the overall five-year health system strategic plan currently being developed. Mike will work collaboratively with Duke University Hospital and PDC leadership on hospital-based and PDC clinics, and he will retain his current administrative responsibilities for Duke Primary Care, Duke HomeCare & Hospice, and Duke Wellness programs and services. Mike previously held the title of Vice President of Medical Affairs and Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs. Dean Andrews will be working to identify a new Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, and Mike's former duties as health system VP for Medical Affairs are in the process of being reassigned.
