By DOMain
Martha Adams, MD, professor of medicine (General Internal Medicine) submitted the following: Our GME Innovations project from 2010 was accepted as a poster and a breakout session for participants of the annual education conference for ACGME last week. "Calling for Collaboration", presented by Martha Adams and Alisa Nagler, studied hospital professionals using smartphone technology, both Blackberry and iPhone. Department of Medicine contributors were Brian Griffith, MD, Jonathan Bae, MD, and Gen Med hospital teams. Others included the surgery teams from transplant and trauma as well as nurses from 8100, 8300, 2100, and 2300 within Duke Hospital - 77 phones, 200 nurses, 55 physicians, and 5 ancillary staff. We were grateful to the program directors, Diana McNeill, MD and Paul Kuo, MD. Calling for Collaboration addressed core competencies of communication, professionalism, and system solutions. The group used many web 2.0 technologies for the project, and even for this presentation with audience response texting via cellphone and Twitter @callingfc. The outcomes showed improvement in expectations about patient care but challenges related to interuptions. All wanted secure text messaging! All appreciated the available medical applications. The physician teams capitalized on communicating directly with one another. Nurses were creative, for example, using the YouTube music videos to distract patients during dressing changes. Next steps, disseminating new knowledge in publication.
