In November, the Duke Internal Medicine Residency Program held the 9th annual, and first virtual, Stead Tread 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Lincoln Community Health Center. Each year the Stead Tread is organized by the residency program's Greenfield Stead Society, and this year participants had from Nov. 1-26 to run or walk a 5K and submit their time.
This year's race raised more than $11,000 for Lincoln Community Health Center, which provides care to some of the most vulnerable individuals in Durham County, a group that has been particularly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This amount breaks past Stead Tread records for most funds raised.
"We are so impressed that despite all that COVID has done to our community, our residents, faculty, and local businesses have prioritized donating and participating in this year’s first ever virtual Stead Tread 5K. The Lincoln Community Health Center has grown to rely on these funds, and this year we are more grateful than ever for the incredible, record breaking amount of money that Duke and the Durham community has raised to support the clinic," said Stephanie Garbarino, MD, chief resident for the Durham VA and one of the members of the Stead Tread leadership committee.
Thank you to all of the faculty, trainees, and staff who participated this year and donated to this worthy cause.
