Duke-led cardiac care unit in Kenya sees first patient

Unknown-1 Western Kenya now has its first cardiac care unit, thanks to the work of Duke physicians and partners at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. Last week, the four-bed cardiac care unit admitted its first patient. Duke and its Kenyan colleagues have been working since 2009 to improve the delivery of clinical cardiovascular care through the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Diseases Center of Excellence at Eldoret's Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. "While the cardiac care unit will undoubtedly change the culture and delivery of cardiovascular care for Kenyans, it can also provide Duke medical students, residents and Cardiology fellows with opportunities to gain clinical and clinical research experience," said Eric Velazquez, principal investigator of the Center of Excellence in Eldoret. The unit is supported by the Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health and the Hock Family Foundation. It is the first step toward a more permanent 10-bed freestanding unit that is scheduled to open this summer. Read the full news story as reported by Duke Global Health Institute.
