GIM Journal Club: Asprin for Primary Prevention in Diabetes

The Duke Division of General Internal Medicine journal club met December 4th at the home of GIM Assistant Professor, Jeannette Stein, MD.. Third year resident Joseph Plaksin, MD, led a spirited discussion on the topic of aspirin for primary prevention in diabetes.

The conclusion indicated that aspirin use for primary prevention in this patient population prevented serious vascular events but also resulted in major bleeding events at a comparable rate.  Methodology of the article was discussed, as well as more existential questions about an individual’s tolerance for the risks of a serious vascular event vs. a major bleeding event.

Be on the lookout for the next journal club in January. More information to come!

The paper discussed this month was: NEJM "Effects of Aspirin for Primary Prevention in Persons with Diabetes Mellitus"
