Guidelines: citing a retracted article

By Anton Zuiker
With the unfortunate news of article retractions by Duke faculty, we turned to the Medical Center Library staff for assistance in finding the following guidelines for citing a retracted journal article: The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors lists Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. Example 15 suggests the following style:
Feifel D, Moutier CY, Perry W. Safety and tolerability of a rapidly escalating dose-loading regimen for risperidone. J Clin Psychiatry. 2000;61(12):909-11. Retraction in: Feifel D, Moutier CY, Perry W. J Clin Psychiatry. 2002;63(2):169.
The National Library of Medicine has guidelines for citations including retractions and errata, with suggested style:
Pediatrics. 2007 Mar;119(3):608-10. Retraction in: Kain ZN, MacLaren J. Pediatrics. 2007 Sep;120(3):698. P less than .05: what does it really mean? Kain ZN, MacLaren J. Center for the Advancement of Perioperative Health and Department of Anesthesiology, Yale University School of Medicine, 333 Cedar St, New Haven, CT 06510, USA. zeev.kain@yale.edu PMID: 17332213 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
