Hankollari + Hemming selected for excellence in education awards

Elizabeth Hankollari, MD, and Patrick Hemming, MD, have both been selected for the Department of Medicine faculty Excellence in Education Awards. This annual initiative provides awards in the amount of $5,000 per person to recognize faculty in each division for excellence in medical education.

Dr. Hankollari has done incredible work as an educator within the hospitalist program at Duke University Hospital and directs the Simulation Program for the Internal Medicine Residency. In this role, Liz is among the only faculty members in the entirety of the Department of Medicine to interact with every intern in the residency program. Her development of curricula, successful teaching, and dedication to the residents’ training has made Simulation among one of the most successful courses in the training program. Furthermore, Dr. Hankallari has volunteered for educational leadership committees, participated in multiple faculty development opportunities, received independent funding from Duke AHEAD, and has consistently had outstanding teaching-service evaluations from trainees.

Dr. Hemming’s educational work includes work in curriculum development, where he has designed and evaluated curricula relating to providing mental health services in primary care and resident collaboration with hospital chaplains.  He serves as a preceptor for residents at the Duke Outpatient Clinic and oversees weekly teaching sessions with internal medicine residents, teaching common ambulatory care topics. Additionally, he is one of the preceptors and advisors in the ACPREP, a new curriculum for internal medicine and family medicine residents that teaches how to discuss advance care planning with their patients. In anonymous feedback surveys, residents have characterized his teaching style as very collaborative, allowing residents time to articulate their findings and plan, and emphasizing the need to understand patients’ perspectives. Residents also note that he takes time to counsel patients on behavior change and that he takes time to break down important aspects of medical decision-making.

Congratulations to Drs. Hankollari and Hemming for this outstanding achievement.
