Internal Medicine Residency News, April 11th, 2022

From the Director

Greetings from the PD Meeting in Charlotte! Drs. Zipkin, Boggan, Van Kirk are representing as well! We hope to bring a bunch of great ideas back to @IMResidency_Duke

Thank you to Dr. Van Kirk, Dr. Cooney, and immediate past chiefs Steph and Matt for helping us arrange the second annual CHIEF DAY OFF for our amazing chiefs and their significant others! Y’all deserve it and we are glad you had a beautiful day to kick back and not answer emails!  WE APPRECIATE YOU!

Other happenings …it’s the final week to fill out your ACGME survey so please take the time to do so if you haven’t already.  You will get another reminder from Tia and me if you haven’t .  Bridget will be sending out a sign up genius for end of year meetings for SARs (Aimee) and interns (Dr Hargett).  JARs, we will meet with you all in July, so be on the lookout for that signup in the coming months.  SARs, if you haven’t registered for boards, its getting to be the final few days before the price goes up so please make sure to get your registration in before that happens.

We are excited for our next How To Be A JAR session on Friday.  These rising JARs will be our first trainees to participate in Stepping In For Respect upstander training, led by the fantastic Drs. Duronville and Sloan.  We look forward to getting everyone this excellent training throughout the coming months.

We have seriously great representation of  DukeFam at the many national meetings that are happening this spring.  Our program leadership (Drs. Boggan, Mitchell, Van Kirk, Zipkin and I) have all represented at the various IM meetings (SGIM, SHM and AAIM/APDIM) and our former residents and chiefs are star studding these meetings as well (way to go Drs. Sloan, Pollard-Sullivan, Sullivan, Salinger, Saint-Surin, Il’Giovine, Geurink and more!).   We will be highlighting our many resident presentations over the next few weeks so be sure to send your abstract titles to Tia and me so we can make sure to give you a shout out.

Kudos

Kudos abound this week! Kudos to Jacob Pierce for receiving an AHA Early Career Investigator Award for his work studying to study rural-urban disparities in heart failure care across the US, to Allison Taylor for receiving the American Society of Hematology Minority Resident Hematology Award Program Award, and to Omar Martinez-Uribe for receiving the American Gastroenterologic Association AGA Investing in the Future Award!  More kudos to Andrew Andreae for going above and beyond to help a veteran, to Katie Centner for amazing work on VA GM (both from Gregg Robbins Welty), right back to Gregg R-W for his compassionate care of a veteran, to Gracie Ernstberger from Dr Alex Cho for being a pro-active and helpful DOC LEAD, to Nesha Nama for an excellent SAR talk, to David Bader from a patient in cardiology clinic for his dedicated care, to Ben Kellogg from Sith Sekar for staying to participate in an important family meeting, and to Amber Meservey for MacGyvering a way to make a patient more comfortable.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
