Internal Medicine Residency News, April 18th, 2022

From the Director

Hoping those who celebrate had meaningful Easter/Passover/Ramadan.  We had a great but short trip to St Louis to see my mom and stepdad.

This week remains busy as we charge into the last quarter of the year.  Special shout out to Dr. Nancy Yang’s parents (Dr. and Mrs. Yang) who read the Med Res News – we are very proud to have Nancy as part of our Duke Family as well!

Thank you to everyone who filled out their ACGME survey! The window is now closed and we reached over 90% participation.  Your time and effort is much appreciated.

It is getting to be the time of end of year reminders so please be on the lookout for CONTRACTS (will show up in medhub to be signed) and emails from Tia if you are graduating (how to complete all of the end of training paperwork), an email from Bridget to sign up for end of year meetings (Aimee = prelim interns and SARs, Bill Hargett = current interns).  JARs, we will catch up with you in July!   The rising JAR/SAR schedule will be out this week – huge thanks to our chiefs as well as Emily for moving mountains to make it happen and to Dr Van Kirk for working with me to check it over.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BRIAN RABE and RABAB ALI on their engagement!!! We are so happy for you.

Congrats to Matt and Dee Labriola on the birth of Day, Taiyang Labriola! Welcome to the DukeFam!!!

Kudos

Other kudos this week to Brian Rabe and intern Diana Waters from a patient at DRH for outstanding care , from Dr. Alex Cho to our DOC LEAD residents (-Melanie Cabezas, who even before the week is done has already demonstrated her willingness to help across the clinic. Jackie Kercheval, who I think I overlooked in recognizing, but could not be dissuaded to abandon her post early on a slow day, but looked for other things to do …plus any resident who has picked up another partnership’s folder(s) and helped complete much-needed and not-at-all glamorous paperwork, mostly unsung (but Emory Buck comes to mind … ), to Emory Buck as well for another successful teaching session at the Nasher Museum, to Pooja Patel, Sam Rauch and Sean Taasan for a week filled with outstanding SAR talks, to our ACRS Ann Cameron Barr, Sean Taasan and Mike Cosiano for an outstanding Duke LEADS, to Mike Ibrahim from Sarah Moserowitz for great work at the VA, to Ben Redpath and Peggy Sahu for making cookies to celebrate Nish Shivakumar’s birthday while on Gen Med (from Mae Hamilton), to Ben Redpath from Nish Shivakumar for his patience with an scared patient, and to Jackie Kercheval and Hannah Schwennensen from Tingrui Zhao for their fantastic patient care.

Pubmed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Chelsea Perfect for her upcoming presentation at the American Geriatrics Society annual meeting!  Please keep sending Tia and I your abstracts and papers  so we can recognize you in the Med Res News!

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
