Internal Medicine Residency News, April 23, 2018

From the Director

Greetings from NYC! I am here as a visiting professor at Cornell and hope to share some of the great things we are doing, and to learn some new things to bring back to our program, as well.  We had a really busy week last week, with schedule releases, a rising JAR learning session (THANK YOU to Mike Grant and Steph Garbarino for serving as our JAR preceptors), the rising SAR retreat, and then the phenomenal charity auction.  Many many thanks to Corey Bradley and Hannah Dzmictrowicz for being co-chairs, to Mike Murn and Talisha Ramchal for their ongoing help throughout the night, to Lynsey Michnowicz and Ernest McCowan for awesome work dealing with the tickets and the post-auction collections, to Mr. and Mrs. Bradley for helping out, and to all the faculty and residents who came out and helped us raise some money for two great charities (Senior PharmAssist and the DOC Patient Fund).  Final total to be determined this week.

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Meg Steiner for arranging a phenomenal journal club at noon conference (this was a suggestion from our curriculum committee, and Meg did a FANTASTIC job (along with hematology faculty discussants Dr. Suhag Parikh and Dr. Toyosi Onwuenmene), to Sipa Yankey and Hira Silat from Peter Kussin for going the extra mile to help a patient at DRH, to Brittany Gatta for a fantastic chair’s conference and to the chiefs for getting the JAR/SAR schedules completed.

Congratulations to David Beavers and Zeena Husain on their wedding!

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Mike Murn for his presentation “Ethical Challenges When An ALS Patient Becomes Locked-In” at the European Respiratory Care Association Congress/ International Conference on Home Mechanical Ventilation.

Have a great week!

Aimee

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Contributed by Leigh Wynkoop and Sonal Patel

Hope everyone has been seeing payoff from using their color-coded sheets and you’re having improved patient-provider continuity in clinic at this time of year. Hard to say what that will look like come July 1, but we think the coming revamped +2 structure will be a boon to continuity as well.

LPNs are trying to catch patients who are here for gap visits to thwart their filling out the “top 3 concerns” today on their check-in sheets so you can keep your visits more problem-focused on the acute issue.

We’re in the midst of a modified workflow for faxes which are will be sent purely electronically. We’ll keep you apprised of any changes to that as we know more.

Please fill out your continuity clinic survey and also come to our Town Hall in May! We really pore over and welcome your feedback and strive to improve your learning experience in PRIME. Your feedback is vitally important.

Staff changes:  Welcome to Chenele Coleman-Sellers who’s a VEC at the front desk. Yvett Hernandez is our 110% 4th LPN who will be here at times. We are glad for their assistance. Departures: VEC Destiny Gilchrist has rotated down to Eye Clinic for now. RN Aisha Cohen and VEC Gina Melvin have moved to Hillandale. LPN April Brewington has moved to Raleigh.

Wed., May 23, 6-7:30 p.m., Med Res Library (Duke North 8252)
PWIM Presents "Before They Were Stars," a career panel highlighting the professional and personal narrative of prominent female faculty in the Dept of Medicine, geared to an audience of residents and fellows. Narrative Medicine
The next Narrative Medicine hang out is on Friday, April 27! It will be at 7 p.m. in the MedRes Library with Dr. Galanos as our faculty preceptor. The prompt will be "humility," which I am sure many of you are feeling after the incredible generosity of so many residents/faculty at the Charity Auction. We still have a few open spots, so let me know if you are interested in joining us! If you have already RSVP'ed and plan to submit a narrative, feel free to e-mail it to me any time so I can disperse it to the group to read prior to Friday.

Excited for another great night!
Matt Labriola

Resident Wellness Initiative Grants
Resident Wellness Initiative Grants for resident-led, innovative projects are dedicated to promote the well-being of our residents, which is of utmost importance to our Program.

The proposed initiatives may be designed to promote resident physician wellness by building skills to handle the challenges and the pace of the current healthcare environment, while continuing to provide quality care to patients.

  1. Two awards each $2,500/project will be funded
  2. Funding start date is July 1, 2018
  3. Each proposal must be led by one or more SARs (current JARs) during the 2018-2019 academic year. Extension of funding may be requested next year beyond June 30, 2019
  4. Teamwork is encouraged to include rising JARs and incoming interns. Multiple SARs may lead one project
  5. Faculty sponsor/advisor may be recruited but not required
  6. Additional funding for a larger award may be available depending on the level of interest and budgets of the project(s). The award committee will review and make a decision on each proposal.
  7. The 2-page proposals are due on June 1, 2018 for review by an award selection committee
  8. Applications forms are attached.

For any questions, please contact murat.arcasoy@duke.edu.

The top 3 abstracts will be selected by a faculty committee for the Califf Research Awards and these research projects will be presented as 15 minute talks 8-9 a.m.

Two best poster awards will be selected (Research poster and QI poster) by the Chief Residents during the poster viewing session prior to Grand Rounds.

We invite all of you to present your scholarly activities as posters (we can send you poster templates):
