From the Director
Great week – the rising SAR retreat at Dr. Cooney’s was a big success – we really enjoyed having the class together to get ready for being program leaders, do some interview prep and learn from our colleagues Sam Dizon and Grace Lee (with help from Nathan Hirshman, Geargin Wilson and Dr G) about peer debriefing, and write some gratitude letters. Plus a nice evening out in Durham after! This week we have another group of interns do their How to Be A JAR session with Stepping in 4 Respect training as well! Finally, our very own Duke IM grad Dr. John Roberts gave an amazing Grand Rounds about the new first year curriculum for Duke Med School – a great opportunity for residents interested in med ed to get involved (send me a note if you want to hear more!).
Kudos
Kudos this week to Alissa Stavig for a fantastic SAR talk, to Casey Howe for her awesome SAR talk, to Tim Hopper and Sean Tassan For their leadership this past year for our Narrative Medicine Group (from Dr G), to Thomas O’toole, Katelyn Seale and Gracie Ernstberger for their compassionate work on 9300 from Dr G as well, another kudos to Katelyn Seale from former Duke IM Prelim/now neuro resident Dylan Ryan for her amazing coordination of care for a complex patient, to Matt Townsend, Erin Hercules, Garret Johnson, Jon Kusner, Brian Rabe, Nicholas Mayne and Daniel Travis for receiving GOLD STARs from patients, and to Damarcus Ingram from Emily Romanoff for being a great CICU call buddy. To Zachary Lorsch for volunteering to get the projector up and running for AHD.

AMB TEACH – new rotation roll out!!
This coming year we will be piloting a new SAR rotation, starting at the DOC, called Amb TEACH. SARs on this rotation will be responsible for supporting interns during clinical workflow and organizing teaching during the block. We are delighted to announce that our inaugural Amb TEACH senior residents, Shannon Herndon, Ben Kellogg, and Pooja Patel will be designing the rotation and will be first to roll it out. Stay tuned for more information!
DOC: Blue Dot = Blue Flag
A message from Brian Marshall, nursing operations director at DOC: to assist with communication and flow, please flip the BLUE FLAG outside your exam room door when putting in orders, it will help alert our nursing team to look for the order. Your orders generate a BLUE DOT for the nurses in Maestro, and the flag will add to that. There is no need for you to change the dot in Maestro.
Also – we will soon be back to full staffing levels, and when we get there we will be shifting to geographic nursing-provider teams and geographic rooms. So you will know who to go to for help, and you will stay in a couple of rooms which are near each other during clinic!
Managing Clinical Messages
Each clinic site has a rubric for how messages are routed, based on what rotation you are on. We are in the process of revising this – be on the lookout for fresh messaging.
