From the Director

Lace up those basketball shoes! Game on in Cameron on May 4th! We are definitely hitting the “end of year” stride here, so keep your eye out for all the various academic and fun activities. Thank you to Nancy Yang for organizing the Duke Chapel Climb on Friday – what a cool way to get some steps in.  Also coming up is the Stead Dim Sum night on May 5, as well as an upcoming night at the Crowley’s House on May 18.  

Academically, don’t forget to submit your posters for resident research day, as well as the Califf Medicine Research Awards. See emails from Dr. Arcasoy for the details.  Please also set up your second half of the year meetings with your advisors, and for SARs and Prelims, set up your end of year checkout meeting with me.  Interns, we will be working on getting your “semi-annual” meetings scheduled, and JARs, plan for those in July/August.

Kudos this week go to Ashley Spann for an outstanding SAR talk, to Jared Lowe, Anmol Singh and Matt Carlisle from Joanna Kipnes for an awesome two weeks on gen med (Great cases! Great camaraderie! Great patient care!) and to Irena Tan and Sean Doerfler from Matt Sparks for excellent care on a busy VA Gen Med team, to our ortho colleague Kwado Owusu-Akyaw for helping us get an emergent appointment for a colleague as well!

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Ambulatory THREADS are here!!
Next year the ambulatory curriculum will be revised into longitudinal threads with clinical themes, and matching academic half day content. I’d like to thank all of the people who have been working behind the scenes to transition the ambulatory mission in the direction that faculty and residents alike have been asking for!

The Ambulatory Town Hall is May 14th, and will start all together in Duke North 2002, where Dinushika will lead with a description of the threads. Then the groups will split off to discuss clinic specific issues.

Threads Description: Starting in July, interns and JARs will be on 6 month longitudinal ambulatory threads. There are 4 threads in all, so everyone will transition through all four threads:

  • The +2 block will include clinics in specific sub-specialities along with continuity clinics, academic half day, and subspecialty clinic if you’ve chosen one based on your fellowship plans.
  • In the subspecialty clinics, residents will RETURN to the same clinic approximately six times in a six month period, to give better traction in the experience and better teaching with the attendings you’ll be working with.
  • Academic Half Day will be thread specific, so the teaching will match the clinics you have during that year
  • Interns will be exposed to EVERY sub-specialty in their first year of training, either inpatient or outpatient, via capturing the things they typically missed into the intern ambulatory threads. This may make career planning easier!

  • Intern Thread A: GI/ID/other VA clinics
  • Intern Thread B: Renal/Rheum/Endocrine
  • JAR Thread A: Hematology (benign and malignant)/Cardiology
  • JAR Thread B: Oncology/Pulm

PWIM "Before They Were Stars" Career Panel
Wed., May 23, 6-7:30 p.m., Med Res Library (Duke North 8252)
PWIM Presents "Before They Were Stars," a career panel highlighting the professional and personal narrative of prominent female faculty in the Dept of Medicine, geared to an audience of residents and fellows. Featuring Drs. Ebony Boulware, Diana McNeill, Laura Svetkey, and Joanne Wilson. Submit questions for the panel ahead of time and RSVP to suchita.shah.sata@duke.edu.
 

Resident Wellness Initiative Grants
Resident Wellness Initiative Grants for resident-led, innovative projects are dedicated to promote the well-being of our residents, which is of utmost importance to our Program. 

The proposed initiatives may be designed to promote resident physician wellness by building skills to handle the challenges and the pace of the current healthcare environment, while continuing to provide quality care to patients.

  1. Two awards each $2,500/project will be funded
  2. Funding start date is July 1, 2018
  3. Each proposal must be led by one or more SARs (current JARs) during the 2018-2019 academic year. Extension of funding may be requested next year beyond June 30, 2019
  4. Teamwork is encouraged to include rising JARs and incoming interns. Multiple SARs may lead one project
  5. Faculty sponsor/advisor may be recruited but not required
  6. Additional funding for a larger award may be available depending on the level of interest and budgets of the project(s). The award committee will review and make a decision on each proposal.
  7. The 2-page proposals are due on June 1, 2018 for review by an award selection committee
  8. Applications forms are attached.

Califf Medicine Resident Research Award
The annual Califf Medicine Resident Research Award competition abstracts are due on April 30, 2018. Awards presentation will take place on May 18, 2018 between 7-9 a.m. in Searle Center Lecture Hall.

Abstracts (300 word) and supporting mentor's letter are due on April 30, 2018. All abstracts submitted for competition will also be presented as posters. The top 3 abstracts will be selected by a faculty committee for the Califf Research Awards and these research projects will be presented as 15 minute talks 8-9 a.m.

Two best poster awards will be selected (Research poster and QI poster) by the Chief Residents during the poster viewing session prior to Grand Rounds.

We invite all of you to present your scholarly activities as posters (we can send you poster templates):

  1. Basic, clinical, medical education, and translational research projects
  2. Case studies / vignettes including ACP posters from 2018
  3. QI projects
  4. Please plan on presenting your posters posters that you have presented previously at a national scientific meeting

To discuss any issues related to the application process or once you have decided to submit an abstract, please e-mail murat.arcasoy@duke.edu to declare your intention to submit, your research mentor's name and the title of your poster.  Please contact the MedRes office staff (Ms. Tia Williams) for assistance with the poster preparation process.

 
 

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
