Internal Medicine Residency News, April 4th, 2022

From the Director

Happy April everyone.  Glad the April Fool’s email was believable.  I am semi-recovered from the Duke game – huge congrats of course to our Blue Devils for getting to the Final Four.  And when you see Chief Jess this week, give a huge DukeFam congrats on her wedding!  Amazing night and fun to see some DukeFam alum as well.  Ramadan Mubarek to all who are observing.

Last week we had our first How To Be a JAR session – many thanks to Dennis and Mike for leading! For those who are away for their schedule AHD How to be a JAR, we are looking at alternative times so stay tuned.   Other things to be doing now..it’s like spring cleaning of the many inbox tasks.  Doesn’t feel like a huge reward when doing them, but it is nice to have the boxes checked.

1.YOUR ACGME SURVEY!  See today’s reminder from Tia which you will only get if you have not yet completed your survey.  Any questions, ask me, an APD or a chief
2. Any “resident identify supervisor” evaluation requests from rotations – faculty can’t give you written feedback unless the evaluation is assigned.  Any questions, please reach out to Tia or Emily
3. Advisor meetings – have you scheduled a spring advisor meeting? Now is a great time to check in
4. Clean up any VA alerts! The veterans thank you

Kudos

Many kudos this week! Kudos to Kaela Miller from nurse Elizabeth Gesse for being extremely helpful on a busy floor with a patient (Kaela was nominated for a Duke Hospital High Five!), to Harsh Patolia from nurse Sarah Shingleton on 8E for great communication and assistance overnight, to Gracie Ernstberger from Dr. Jane Gagliardi for helping out on Gen Med, to Zach Sutton for an excellent SAR talk, Hayley Cunningham for an excellent SAR talk as well and Courtney Dominguez for an awesome Cohen Conference.  More kudos to Jeff Lee as well as Bari Rosenberg and Sarah Moserowitz for a joyous bday celebration in the MICU from Lynette Staplefoot-Boynton, to Harrison Matthews (from Zach Lorsch) for going above and beyond by finding the responsible tick for a patient’s illness AND taking said tick to the microscope to be examined (frozen in hand sanitizer, thank you Sandra Loriaux), and to Hannah Florian and EM intern Cody Hill for helping a patient get OPAT despite many challenges (from Sarah Morgan).

Pubmed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to the team of Gregg Robbins-Welty, Peggy Sahu, Drew Vista and Jenny Van Kirk along with medical student Dana Rubenstein for their recent publication

Rubenstein D, Robbins-Welty GA, Sahu M, Vista A, Van Kirk J. A Rare Case of Non-Acidotic High Anion Gap Pancreatic Ketonemia. Am J Med. 2022 Mar 12:S0002-9343(22)00176-0. doi: 10.1016/j.amjmed.2022.02.014.

Will follow up with all of our amazing ACC presenters next week!  Here’s a pic of JT Tanaka presenting the troponin work that was also presented at Grand Rounds!

Have a great week (in scrubs if you wish!)

Aimee

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
