Internal Medicine Residency News, April 9, 2018

From the Director

Hope everyone is doing well. Schedules are poised to come out VERY SOON, with many thanks to the chiefs (and Jason’s mad computer skills) for making this happen. We have the charity auction coming up, put together by your hard working co-chairs Corey Bradley and Hannah Dzmictrowicz.  Get your tickets and be there!

I hope many of you had a chance to meet and welcome Ernest McCowan to the Med Res team! He’s getting ready to plan the Faculty-Resident Basketball Game, so stay tuned! Two Stead events upcoming, sponsored by the Warren Society – Thursday, April 19, Dinner at the Ronald McDonald House, and then a friends and family cookout at the Crowley’s on Friday, May 18.  So, get your community service in with the Warren Society and then mark your calendars for a fun and relaxing evening with the Crowley family!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Brittany Gatta and Joe Plaksin from Tara Spector for helping out on a busy night float night, to Joe Plaksin and Lara Hayes from Brittany Gatta for being awesome teammates on night float and for being such admirable doctors, and to Shaki Salvador from cards fellow Rahul Loungani for doing a fantastic job in the CCU. Kudos to Shannon Niedermeyer for getting a major kudos sent to the top brass at the VA from a VA patient, and to Jim Isaacs for an excellent chair’s conference.

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Mike Murn for his abstract “Ethical Challenges When an ALS Patient Becomes Locked-in” presented at the International Conference on Home Mechanical Ventilation in Lyon, France with mentor Phil Choi.

Have a great week!

Resident Wellness Initiative Grants
Resident Wellness Initiative Grants for resident-led, innovative projects are dedicated to promote the well-being of our residents, which is of utmost importance to our Program.

The proposed initiatives may be designed to promote resident physician wellness by building skills to handle the challenges and the pace of the current healthcare environment, while continuing to provide quality care to patients.

  1. Two awards each $2,500/project will be funded
  2. Funding start date is July 1, 2018
  3. Each proposal must be led by one or more SARs (current JARs) during the 2018-2019 academic year. Extension of funding may be requested next year beyond June 30, 2019
  4. Teamwork is encouraged to include rising JARs and incoming interns. Multiple SARs may lead one project
  5. Faculty sponsor/advisor may be recruited but not required
  6. Additional funding for a larger award may be available depending on the level of interest and budgets of the project(s). The award committee will review and make a decision on each proposal.
  7. The 2-page proposals are due on June 1, 2018 for review by an award selection committee
  8. Applications forms are attached.

For any questions, please contact murat.arcasoy@duke.edu.
