From the Director

Many thanks to our JARs and SARs for helping out during our Intern Retreat on Thursday!  The intern class learned about feedback, the role of EOHW, and career planning as well as wrote the letters to themselves that will be returned at graduation, and worked with the chiefs to get answers to some of the big questions of intern year.  We all also enjoyed a fun evening at BullCity Ciderworks.  Many thanks to all who made this possible, including Ernest for the logistics!

This week we are looking forward to Dr. Cooney’s Welcome Party on Friday! Please make sure to RSVP so we have a reasonably accurate headcount! See Paperless Post invitation for more details.

Afternoon consultant rounds in the MedRes library are off to a great start! Don’t forget to stop by and learn from the consulting teams.  Many thanks to Dr. Jenny Van Kirk for spearheading this educational effort!

JARs, believe it or not, applications for the SHORT TERM GLOBAL HEALTH ROTATIONS for your SAR year will be released soon and are due Sept. 30.  More information to come this week on planning for SAR year so that you can make decisions about what your priorities are!

Kudos
Kudos this week go to Jeremy Brooksbank for a great SAR talk and Stacy Bagrova for an equally awesome Chair’s conference.  Additional kudos from Matt Labriola to Becca Lumsden for great work in the ICU, to Nathaniel Harris for being a phenomenal teach JAR on CAD nights, and to JD Serfas for such helpful teaching about pacemakers from the CAD nights crew of Tammy Hsu, Joyce Hwang, Nathan Hirshman and Gregg Robbins-Welty.  Also to Taylor Triana and Kathryn Hutchins for keeping the patients well cared for and the teams well fed on Duke Gen Med!

We are excited to hear about all the interviews for our fellowship applicants.  Please keep updating the interview spreadsheet so we can keep track of everything – much appreciated.

PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Connor Moseley for his recent publication in the journal Pediatrics:  Medicaid and CHIP Child Health Beneficiary Incentives: Program Landscape and Stakeholder Insights Connor A. Moseley, Madhulika Vulimiri, Robert S. Saunders, William K. Bleser, Eliana M. Perrin, Sarah C. Armstrong, Gary X. Wang, Peter A. Ubel, Mark McClellan and Charlene A. Wong.  Impressive work!

Have a great week!
Aimee

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Contributed by Sonal Patel and Leigh Wynkoop

We’re sorry to see LPN Jill Caudillo leave PRIME at the end of this month – but happy for her that she’ll have a much shorter commute to the Raleigh VA CBOC. She’ll be missed!

Welcome to new LPN Scott Thomas who is in orientation now and will start working in PRIME soon. He’s most recently worked in primary care at the VA in Charleston, SC. Also joining us soon is RN Lia Bertolaccini whose time is going to be shared between PRIME and Women’s Health Clinic. We’re happy to have these new nurses on board!

Tanmay Gokhale, MD, PhDHope all PRIMEsters are reading the 1st of the month email with important clinic updates about consults, orders, etc. We had a little Easter egg hidden within the Aug. 1 email and an astonishingly (and disappointingly) small percentage of you replied that you’d read that far in the email. A lottery of respondees’ names resulted, with budding cardiologist Tanmay Gokhale being drawn at random by RN Carmen Hurst, to win the prize inspired by Dale Dubin’s “Rapid Interpretation of EKG’s” book. From Wikipedia: “Dubin practiced medicine in Tampa, Florida, and gained fame within the medical community with the 1972 publication of Rapid Interpretation of EKG's, a best-selling textbook suited for medical students and junior residents. In it, Dubin adopts a simplistic fill-in-the-blank style to teach the basics of reading electrocardiograms. In the fiftieth printing of the book, he hid within the copyright notice an offer to give his prized 1965 Ford Thunderbird to anyone who actually read the message and responded. Out of 60,000 copies in that printing, only 5 readers noticed and responded [hey, that’s worse than our response rate], and Dubin's own daughter delivered the car to the winner (selected by a random drawing).” Please congratulate Tanmay on receiving his prize of a convertible!  (Google if you want the less savory backstory about Dr. Dubin, which will go unspoken here).

Review clinical pearls from resident report on the ACR Teach Blog!
On many rotations residents generate excellent clinical teaching points that the ACRs send out for residents on that rotation. Now, this high-yield information will be available to everyone via the ACR Teach Blog! As part of the new Duke General Medicine Teaching Service website, the ACRs will regularly update the ACR Teach Blog with valuable information in case you’re on a different rotation.
