From the Director

Happy Monday! Hope you all got to enjoy some of the beautiful weekend this weekend! I know a lot of you had a great time at the annual Kerby Society Durham Bulls Game – thank you to Ernest and Joel for planning the perfect night at the ballpark.

Go ahead and go from computer to 5K with the upcoming Stead Tread – mark your calendars for Sept. 29 and join one of our “signature” events of the year! Get a little Vitamin D, some exercise and support the Lincoln Community Health Center. Check with Dan Turner for details!

Other upcoming events include our “Meet Dr. Cooney” night at Ponysaurus on Sept. 12.

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Ashley Naughton for a magnificent SAR talk, to Lauren Ranard from Cameron Oswalt for being an amazing SAR on Duke Gen Med, to our outgoing ACR’s Matt Tucker, Wynn Hunter and Ashley Naughton for great work on organizing conferences, reports, and teaching the students, to Sheila Sherzoy from Bruce Peyser for an outstanding diagnosis made in the clinic. Kudos for being amazing #dukefamily to Dennis and Sarah Lynne Narcisse and Nick and Bridget Kamp from Bryan Golubski. Also welcome to the Duke family to Hailey Jawitz, with proud parents Nicole and Oliver Jawitz!

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to graduate Ashley Spann, and current residents Shaki Salvador, Talisha Ramchal, Lauren Donnangelo, Maryann Osayande, Josh Lee and Diana Mosquera for the team effort (and to graduate and now attending Julius Wilder) for their poster accepted to the AASLD meeting in San Francisco! “Prognostic Utility of Ammonia Testing on Admission in Cirrhotic Patients with and without Acute on Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF).”

Have a great week everyone!

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Contributed by Daniella Zipkin

What on earth is a “CEX”??? I didn’t know we could talk like that in clinic?
Don’t worry, it’ll be alright – it stands for Clinical Evaluation eXercise and is a brief observation of your clinic encounters by faculty. These observed visits tend to be very rich teaching opportunities around all the nuances of doctor patient communication. They are also considered a professional expectation for all residents. Please help your clinic attendings get them done! Here’s the details:

  • Interns should log at least TWO CEX’s per year, at least one of them this fall. JARs need at least ONE, SARs should also do ONE.
  • BE PROACTIVE! If your patient has arrived and the attendings aren’t busy, grab one and get observed. (Attendings will let you know if the resident-attending ratio is too tight that day to step out).
  • The observation should generally be the history and the beginning of the visit, the attending may linger through the exam portion. The attending will remain silent and let you do your thing.
  • You will then sign out the clinical portion of the visit, and make time for feedback on how the CEX went after that, either right away or at the end of clinic.
  • CEX evaluation forms are brief and will be logged in MedHub by the attendings.
  • The residency office will keep count and share counts with the clinics.

Ambulatory Threads Roll Out
How are the threads going for you, categorical interns and JARs? Please share feedback with Winn, Emily, or Dani.
