From the Director

Happy December! Hard to believe again how fast we are approaching the holidays (and of course the amazing DOM Holiday Party, complete with the Chief Resident Performance). Can’t wait. This week is also a big week for our SARs, as it is FELLOWSHIP MATCH on Wednesday. We are excited to celebrate with you all and to see the results of your hard work.

A couple of reminders – interns are meeting with Dr. David Turner and Kate McDaniel at noon on Thursday in the Med Res Office; please catch up on logging your procedures so that you don’t fall behind and lose track of what you did; SARs, don’t forget to register for the August ABIM exam (“The Boards”) before the price goes up; schedule request forms will be coming out just before the holiday schedule starts – please check in with me or the chiefs or an APD if you have any questions; if you haven’t scheduled your “semi-annual” evaluation meeting with Dr. Hargett and me, please contact Erin to do so!  We are having a lot of fun meeting with everyone and hope it has been a helpful process for you as well.

Kudos

Kudos this week go to our awesome chair’s conference presenter Jasmine Washington – great case on Friday! Also to our My Take presenters Keva Garg, Tara Holder, and AJ Blood, as well as our tour guides Landon Brown, Steven Kimani, David Beavers, Tamara Saint Surin and Chris Ferreri. More kudos to Maggie Moses and Matt Labriola from Aly Shogan for caring for a patient during a code overnight, to Dr. Frances Miller from Caroline Sloan for being a great teacher at the VA CCU and to Joe Plaksin and Ben Ranard from Brian Schneider for their great work at the VA.

Thanks to everyone for your generosity over Thanksgiving - we ended up donating $1,000 in gift cards to DOC (as shown with Jan Dillard, who sends her thanks)!

The Scope is a weekly newsletter that goes out on Fridays and summarizes the best evidence-based medical research from the week in a few fun and easy-to-read sentences. You can check out this weeks email below and people can sign up, see prior issues, and learn more about it at www.medicinescope.com.

 
Faculty-Resident Research Grant

The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018

The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems.
