From the Director
Thank you to our amazing Chiefs (as well as the most amazing team of Lynsey and Kayla who put together all the candy grams) for dressing up and giving out literally hundreds of candy grams sent to you all from your colleagues and the GME team to thank you for your general awesomeness and also fuel those nights with a little sugary pick-me-up. Fun-bruary is the best! Matt also was looking for a reason to re-purpose his red jean jacket vest from the holiday Zoom party.
Fellowship info repeat night tonight at 6:30 on Zoom with Dr. Hargett and me for JARs applying to fellowship in the 2021 cycle and also any CIP interns applying to fellowship this year as well. Dogs welcome – we had at least 5 at the fellowship meeting last week. They all seemed ready to write a personal statement or at least a letter of recommendation.
Kudos
Kudos this week go to Maggie Salinger and Henry Foote for outstanding SAR talks and Ryan Duffy for a fantastic Cohen Conference. Kudos to Michael Burt from Dr. Hannah Dzimotrowicz for moving mountains to help a patient leave the hospital, to Cindy Pabon, Nadia Yimer and Aubrie Carroll from Daniel Bernstein for making Duke Gen Med awesome, to James Helzberg (sent in by Bari Rosenberg, but echoed by Neha Kayastha and Dr. Jenny Van Kirk) for his outstanding leadership during a challenging patient code, to Brandon Durant from Omar Martinez Uribe for his excellent work caring for an ill patient on DHP, and to Kirsten Binz from Bari Rosenberg for being an awesome CICU call buddy. Y’all better keep sending the tacos … Bari is making a run for taco champ quarter 3!
PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to VA CRQS Dr Govind Krishnan for his poem that was recently published in Hektoen International Journal of Medical Humanities!
Have a great week, we hope it will stop raining soon

Clinic Corner: VA/Prime
Contributed by Sonal Patel/Leigh Wynkoop
3,000 first dose vaccines given this past weekend at the Durham VAMC. PRIME clinic is part of the solution, and you are a big part of this! Thanks to each of you for counseling and encouraging vaccination. Please be mindful that the VA’s criteria, which matches the CDC priority groups, have some slight differences from the state’s, so when you’re in clinic please keep an eye on the vaccine criteria (emailed each week and posted in exam rooms) and ask patients to call the main number at 919-286-0411 to get scheduled if they meet criteria.
This week PRIME welcomes back LPN Michelle Dunlap who’s been detailed to work on the inpatient units. Thanks to LPN Valerie Queen who helped out in PRIME while we were shortstaffed. LPN Joseph Collins has wrapped up his inpatient detail and is moving home to Florida.
We’re still working to expand our video visits. If your patient is appropriate for telehealth followup, please ask if they can do a video visit instead of a phone visit and enter order appropriately. Please also schedule patients for face-to-face appointments if you have not seen them in some time.
Thanks everyone and stay safe!
