And Fun-bruary continues! Many thanks to Dr. Kimberley Evans and the Maestro team for helping many of you get trained in Dragon dictation last week. If you were unable to get to training, please reach out to the chiefs, and they can get you in touch with the training team for more options. Also thank you to our Stead faculty for sponsoring a great breakfast on Valentine’s Day last week!

Fellowship information sessions for rising SARs are UPCOMING! Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. or Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Med Res Library! The sessions have the same content, so plan on attending only one.

Tonight is the Orgain sponsored Stead mixer at Pour, so hope to see you there!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Continue to push those flu shots to patients! Even if patients refuse for the nurse, you might be able to convince them to get vaccinated.

Please carefully review, update, and RENEW meds at EVERY VISIT and give the patient an updated med list at the end of the visit.

We have added an area to PRIME notes about advance directives (implemented after  feedback from multiple PRIME residents) – this may change location and format very soon. More details to come. The School of Medicine will host a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross on Thur., March 8, from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Trent Semans Center. 

 
 
Voices of Medicine

The Department of Medicine will present another staging of Voices of Medicine, a live show featuring true stories from our faculty, trainees, and staff, on Feb. 28, 2018. Learn more.

The theme of this show is humility.

Duke faculty, trainees, and staff are invited to make a story pitch. We’ll select five storytellers, and Jeff Polish, executive director of the Monti, will help you hone your story to an 8-minute gem that you will tell on stage in front of a live audience. To volunteer to tell a story, register here.

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
